Posts tagged #ResignModi were blocked by social media giant Facebook Inc. before restoring them hours later. This move from Facebook was enough to strike a controversy that erupted at the time when government had asked social media companies to remove content as country battles against second wave of the COVID-19.
A spokesperson for Facebook said the hashtag was barred by mistake and not at the behest of the government, without elaborating. The social media company usually blocks hashtags for a variety of reasons, some manually but most of them also on the basis of automated internal guidelines. The spokesperson further said that this error stemmed from content associated with the label and not the hashtag itself and we temporarily blocked this hashtag by mistake, not because the Indian government asked us to, and have since restored it.”
Nearly 100 posts and URLs were taken down by microblogging site Twitter and other social media platforms following the government order asking them to do so. The government ordered social media platforms to remove content that was critical of handling of the present-day medical crisis or spreading fake news around the pandemic.
